At The Foil Printing Co., we offer two adhesive types for foil stickers, depending on how and where they’ll be used. Our foil stickers can be supplied with either standard tack or high tack adhesive, depending on where they’ll be applied and how strong the bond needs to be.
Standard Tack is the option we recommend for most foil sticker projects. It works well for everyday uses such as product packaging, shipping boxes, tissue paper, envelopes, hang tags, promotional stickers, and general branding. It gives a reliable hold on clean, smooth surfaces while still being easy to apply.
High Tack uses a stronger adhesive and is better suited to more demanding surfaces or situations where the sticker needs to stay firmly in place. This can include slightly textured packaging, rougher materials, curved surfaces, or products that will be handled more often.

If your stickers will be applied to flat, clean surfaces such as standard packaging or boxes, our sample pack is a great way to see how our materials and foil finishes perform in real-world use.
For more demanding applications such as uneven surfaces, textured materials, curved products, or environments where moisture may be present, we recommend ordering a small test run of your design such as 5 sample copies. This allows you to check how the adhesive performs based on your specific sticker size, shape, surface, and foil combination.

When people talk about foil printing, there are two main methods you’ll usually come across: traditional hot foil stamping and digital foiling.
Here at The Foil Printing Co., we specialize in digital foil printing. This process applies foil to printed areas using heat and pressure, without the need for expensive custom metal dies. That means faster setup, more flexibility, and more efficient production across different designs, especially for short or medium foil print runs.

Our Approach to Digital Foiling
Not all digital foil processes work the same way. We use a flat foil method, where the base print design is first printed in toner, then covered with a soft-touch laminate to create a smooth, consistent surface for the foil to bond to.
The foil elements are then printed as a second toner layer on top of the soft-touch laminate. During the foiling process, heat and pressure bond the metallic foil precisely to those areas, while the rest of the sheet is left unchanged.
Some print finishers use a raised process, adding another layer beneath the foil to create texture. While this can add depth, it can also limit how designs are applied, especially when working with fine detail or double-sided print.

For most projects, digital foiling offers the best balance of quality, cost, flexibility, and turnaround time. It allows us to apply foil cleanly to logos, text, and fine details, while also supporting multiple designs and double-sided foil without expensive extra setup.

Die-cut stickers are cut all the way through both the sticker material and backing paper, creating individual stickers in the exact shape of your design. Before printing, you’ll receive a digital proof for approval. This is where we get your artwork ready for print, send over your final proof and flag anything we spot during the pre-press stage. Artwork Requirements
Setting up artwork for foil stickers is mainly about showing us three things clearly: what you’d like printed, what you’d like foiled, and where the sticker should be cut. Your CMYK artwork shows the printed design, your foil layer shows where the metallic finish should appear, and your cutline shows the final sticker shape.
Once those parts are separated and your order has been placed, our team can check your file, prepare your proof, and get your foil stickers moving through production.
Foil Sticker Artwork Checklist
✔️Add 2mm bleed around your artwork, especially if colors, images, patterns or backgrounds run to the edge.
✔️Set printed artwork to CMYK and use a minimum resolution of 300 DPI for image-based artwork.
✔️Supply your files as PDF, JPG or fully packaged AI files.
✔️Keep important text, logos, product names and key details within a 3mm safe zone from the cut edge.
✔️Supply foil elements separately from your CMYK artwork, set as 100% K black.
✔️Supply your sticker cutline separately as a solid 1 pt pink line.
Foil Layers and Sticker Cut Lines
For foil stickers, your foil layer should only show the areas that need the metallic finish, such as logos, product names, borders, icons, seals or limited-edition details. This should be kept separate from your printed artwork and supplied as 100% K black.
Your cutline tells us the shape of the sticker. For shaped stickers, die-cut stickers and kiss-cut stickers, please keep the cutline separate from both the print artwork and foil layer, so our team can clearly see where the sticker needs to be cut.

Kiss-Cut vs Die-Cut Sticker Setup
For kiss-cut stickers, the cutline shows where the sticker will peel away from the backing sheet. For individually cut stickers with padding, we need two cutlines: one for the kiss-cut sticker shape and one for the outer backing shape.
The outer die-cut line should sit 5mm larger than the kiss-cut shape, giving enough room to peel the sticker from the backing. For this setup, please allow 7mm bleed in total, so the printed area covers both the sticker and the padded backing area.

For the best results:
Use foil for the details that need to catch attention quickly, such as logos, product names, seals, icons or limited-edition messages.
Keep small stickers simple, as tiny text, fine lines and intricate foil detail can be harder to read once applied.
Avoid placing foil too close to the cut edge, especially on shaped stickers, as this can make any slight movement more noticeable.
Think about where the sticker will be used. Foil that looks subtle on-screen may stand out much more on packaging, glass, tissue paper or dark surfaces.
For kiss-cut stickers with padding, keep key foil details inside the sticker shape rather than using the backing area as part of the main design.
If your sticker is very small, use foil as a highlight rather than trying to foil every detail.

Due to the complexity of setting up your aluminum foil stickers, we require a minimum order quantity of 50 custom-printed foil stickers
Can I have more than 1 foil color on my foil art stickers?

Do I have to have laminate in order to make foil stickers?
How do I know what my chosen foil color will look like before ordering?

Unfortunately, we are unable to add more than 1 foil shade to a single sticker, however if you would like multiple sticker designs printed in different foil shades, you’re welcome to configure each design separately, selecting a different foil color per batch.
