Foil Printing: What Are Split Designs?

Foil Printing: What Are Split Designs?

It’s a question we often get from customers who are new to foil printing: what are split designs?

Does it have something to do with printing separate foil colors on the same design? Or maybe supplying one design for the front of your foil print stationery, and another design for the back? Perhaps it’s all to do with the foil printing process, and the kind of layers and finishes that have to be carried out step by step to create the finished prints?

Nope, it’s none of those things. Split designs are really a whole lot simpler than that.

Split Designs In Foil Printing: What's It All About?

When you place an order on our website, you’ll have the option to “Split Across Multiple Designs?” before you add your order to your shopping cart.

This just means that we’ll take the total number of prints you order, and share this out across the number of different designs you’d like us to print, in any quantity you like.

When we talk about splitting your order across a number of designs, this means that you can provide us with several different artwork designs, which are all foil printed as part of one batch.

These could either be completely different designs, or maybe you just want the same design but printed in different colors of metallic foil:

Foil Printing Across Split Designs: An Example

Say you order one set of 250 foil-printed business cards. You could now supply us with one, two, three, four, five or more separate designs that we can apply to your 250 business cards.

Say, for example, you want a mix of ten different names and titles in your batch of business cards. Before adding this order to your shopping cart, you’d click on the box titled “Split Across Multiple Designs?”. Here you’d select “Split Over 5+ Designs” from the drop-down menu, then complete your purchase.

So now that you’ve ordered a batch of 250 foil-print business cards, split across 10 different designs, then you’ll get your ten different designs printed on ten business cards each in this batch. Simple!

Or if you’d prefer an uneven quantity, say 20, 10, 10, 5 and 5, just let us know and we can make that work! This is done by sending us a spreadsheet along with your design outlining details of which design or details you want on the quantity of your order. Something like this for example:

Why Do We Offer Split Designs On Our Foil Prints?

See, it’s more expensive to produce a print run on a foil printing machine than on a regular, non-foil digital printer. For that reason, we have to set a minimum amount of 50 prints for every order, just to make each print run cost-effective for our business.

And because we have to set that minimum order amount of 50 copies, we’d like to give you more value for money on your order! For that reason, we decided to offer you as many different designs as you like on every order you place with us. It just gives you a bit more variety, and more bang for your buck, since you’re naturally paying slightly more for foil-printed items than you would for non-foiled print.

So there you go! We hope this article explains split designs clearly – but if you do have any questions about split-design printing, or just any aspect of foil printing at all, then don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re happy to tell you anything you’d like to know!
