When talking about foil printing, there are two main methods you’ll have likely come across: traditional hot foil stamping and digital foiling.
Here at The Foil Printing Co., we specialise in digital foil printing. This process applies foil to printed areas using heat and pressure, without the need for costly custom metal dies. It allows for faster setup, greater flexibility, and more efficient production across different designs and short or medium foil print runs.

Our Approach to Digital Foiling
Not all digital foil processes are the same. We use a flat foil method, where the base (print) design is first printed in toner, then covered with a soft-touch laminate to create a velvety, smooth, consistent surface for the foil to adhere to.
Foil elements are then printed as a second toner layer on top of the soft-touch laminate. During the foiling process, heat and pressure bond the metallic foil precisely to these areas, while the rest of the sheet remains unchanged.
Some print finishers use a raised process, adding an additional layer beneath the foil to create texture. While this can introduce depth, it can also limit how the designs are applied - particularly for fine detail or double-sided print.

Which Option is Right?
For most projects, digital foiling provides the best balance of quality, cost, flexibility, and turnaround time. It allows for precise application on logos and fine detail, while also supporting multiple and double-sided foil designs without additional costly setup.
Because foil is applied by our experienced finishing team to a controlled, laminated surface, results remain consistent across different designs and quantities - particularly where alignment and clarity are paramount.

What Makes Our Foil Vouchers Different
Foil vouchers need to look good, but they also need to be practical. They might be given as a birthday present, added to a hamper, sold at a salon reception, handed out as a prize, or used as part of a seasonal offer. That means the size, finish, foil placement and any tear-off sections all need to work properly, not just look nice on screen.

Voucher Sizes, Formats & Custom Shapes
Our foil vouchers can be printed in landscape, portrait, square or custom shapes. The most common voucher sizes are A6, DL and 74 x 210mm, but we can print them at almost any size if you need something more specific.
A smaller voucher can work well for simple offers, discount codes or loyalty rewards, while a longer DL-style format often suits gift vouchers, treatment vouchers, meal vouchers or anything that needs a little more room for terms, codes or booking details.
For something more unusual, we can also produce custom shapes. This can work well if the voucher needs to match your brand, product, event or packaging.
Single or Double-Sided Foil Vouchers
You can choose single or double-sided vouchers, depending on how much information you need to include.
Many customers use the front for the main message, value, logo or gift wording, then use the reverse for terms, expiry dates, contact details, booking information or a QR code. Foil can be added to one side or both sides, depending on the design.
If one side is printed but not foiled, or left blank, you can choose whether that side is unlaminated, soft-touch laminated, matt laminated or gloss laminated. The foiled side will always have soft-touch lamination to help the foil apply cleanly.
Black or CMYK Print
Your voucher artwork can be printed in black or full CMYK colour before the foil is applied. Black print works well for simple gift vouchers, clean layouts and text-led designs, while CMYK gives you more freedom for brand colours, backgrounds, patterns, product imagery or seasonal artwork.
Foil can then be used to highlight the parts people notice first, such as the voucher value, logo, heading, border, offer message or gift wording.
Why Soft-Touch Lamination is Needed
All foiled sides include soft-touch lamination. This gives the foil a smooth, consistent surface to apply to and helps us get a cleaner finish.
If your voucher is printed on both sides but only foiled on one, the non-foiled side can be finished separately. Some customers leave it unlaminated for a simpler finish, while others choose soft-touch, matt or gloss so both sides feel more consistent.
Perforated Vouchers & Tear-Off Sections
If your voucher includes a tear-off section, we can add up to three vertical or horizontal perforations, or custom perforation placement if your design needs something more specific.
Perforations are useful for claim slips, redemption sections, receipt stubs, prize draw entries, booking references, or any part of the voucher that needs to be removed and kept. If you’re using a perforation, it’s worth leaving clear space around the tear line so codes, values, QR codes, barcodes and expiry dates stay easy to read after the section has been removed.
Rounded Corners & Finishing
Rounded corners can be added if you want to soften the shape of your vouchers and remove sharp edges. We offer 6mm or 16mm rounded corners, or you can leave the corners square if that suits the design better.
For some designs, rounded corners give the voucher more of a gift-card feel. For others, a clean square edge works better, especially if the voucher is being inserted into envelopes, wallets or presentation sleeves.
Sequential Numbering & Data Merge
If your vouchers need unique numbers, codes or references, we can set them up using data merge. This is often used for gift voucher numbers, redemption codes, booking references, prize draw entries or tear-off claim sections.
To do this, we’ll need a spreadsheet with the details exactly as they should appear on the vouchers. For example, this might be a column of sequential voucher numbers, unique discount codes, names, values or expiry dates.
Please make sure the spreadsheet is checked carefully before sending it to us, as the data supplied will be used to create the final print files. It’s also helpful if your artwork clearly shows where each variable detail should sit, especially if the number or code needs to appear on both the main voucher and a tear-off section.

You can supply your own print-ready voucher artwork, or our team can design it for you from a brief.
If you already have artwork, we’ll check the setup before proofing to make sure the print artwork, foil layer, bleed, safe zones and any perforation guides are clear. If we design your voucher for you, we’ll work from your logo, wording, brand colours, offer details and any practical information that needs to be included.
Please check your proof carefully before approving it, especially voucher values, codes, expiry dates, terms, phone numbers, URLs and QR codes. Once approved, your proof is what we’ll use for print.

Every Order Checked by Hand
Foil printing requires a high level of accuracy, which is why every order is checked by a member of our quality control team before dispatch.
We produce additional sheets during each run (we call them ‘overs’), allowing our team to remove any setup sheets or imperfect prints during our strict quality control process. This ensures that only the final, approved prints arrive at your door.
Proofing and Artwork Support
Before printing, you’ll receive a digital proof for approval. This is where we get your artwork ready for print, email your final proof and highlight any potential issues we spot during the pre-press stage. Our team pays special attention to bleed, safe zones, and any areas where foil may affect fine detail or small text.
Careful review at this stage is crucial and helps avoid delays, ensuring the final result matches expectations.

Where a fault is identified on our side, we will arrange a reprint as quickly as possible.

Artwork Requirements
Setting up artwork for foil vouchers is mainly about showing us two things clearly: what you’d like printed, and what you’d like foiled. Your CMYK artwork shows the printed voucher design, while your foil layer shows exactly where the metallic finish should appear.
Once those parts are separated and your order has been placed, our team can check your file, prepare your proof, and get your vouchers moving through production.
Foil Artwork Checklist
To help us set up your foil vouchers smoothly, please supply your artwork using the following guidelines:
✔️Add 2mm bleed around your artwork, especially if backgrounds, colours, patterns or borders run to the edge.
✔️Set all printed artwork to CMYK.
✔️Use a minimum resolution of 300DPI for image-based artwork.
✔️Supply files as PDF, JPG, or fully packaged AI files.
✔️Keep important text, logos, voucher values, codes, expiry dates, terms and contact details within a 3mm safe zone from the cut edge.
✔️Supply foil elements separately from your CMYK artwork, ideally on a separate page or artboard.
✔️Set foil elements as 100% K black. This black layer will not print as black ink - it simply shows us where the foil should be applied.
Setting Up Your Foil Layer
Your foil layer tells us where the metallic finish should go. For vouchers, this is often used for logos, values, headings, borders, gift messages, icons, codes or offer details.
If your voucher is single-sided, we’ll need:

Perforations and Tear-Off Areas
If your voucher includes a tear-off section, please show the perforation line clearly using a 1pt magenta line on a separate layer or separate page.
Leave enough space around the perforation so important details are not too close to the tear line. This is especially important for voucher codes, expiry dates, terms, QR codes, barcodes or anything the customer needs to keep readable after the section has been torn off.

Our team checks foil voucher artwork every day, so we know the little design choices that can make a voucher easier to read, easier to use and nicer to hand over.
For the best results:
Use foil for the details that make the voucher feel important, such as the logo, voucher value, heading, gift message or border.
Keep practical details like codes, expiry dates, terms, barcodes and QR codes printed rather than foiled, so they stay clear and easy to scan.
If your voucher has a tear-off section, keep the code, value or claim details well away from the perforation line.
Avoid putting foil over areas that may need to be written on, stamped or marked in-store.
Keep small print simple. Voucher terms, booking instructions and redemption details are usually better as printed text, not foil.
Use foil as a highlight rather than covering too much of the voucher, especially if the design already includes a lot of information.
Make sure the main value or offer is easy to spot at a glance, whether that’s £25, 20% off, a free treatment, a meal voucher or a gift card message.
Keep foil, print artwork and any perforation guides clearly separated.

Before uploading your files, please check that your foil layer is separate, foil is supplied as 100% K black, important voucher details sit inside the 3mm safe zone, bleed has been added where needed, and any perforation lines are clearly marked in magenta.

If you need help designing your foil vouchers, select the ‘Supply Brief & We Design’ option at the checkout and send us a design brief instead of finished artwork. From there, you’ll be assigned a designer to work with you to create your dream foil vouchers.

Can I have a different foil colour on the front and back of my foil voucher cards?+
Absolutely! When you get to configuring your order, you’ll be given the option to select both front & rear foil if you choose double-sided foil voucher printing. So, whether you’re going for gold on the front and silver on the back, holographic on the front and pink on the back, or any other combination, we’re here to help make your foil voucher printing a spectacle.
Can I have an individually numbered tear-off stub at the end of my vouchers?+
Yes, you can. By supplying a spreadsheet complete with the numbers you need to individualise your vouchers with, our team will perform a data merge, resulting in individually numbered vouchers. Our tear-off ends are seamlessly created, and we can even data merge your unique number onto the body of the vouchers as well as the tear-off, perfect for easy book-keeping.
Can I have a fully foiled voucher?+
Of course you can, and while golden tickets are the most popular iteration, we offer full foil coverage on the front and rear in every metallic shade we keep in stock! From brilliant blue to rose gold, we’ve got you covered.
How long will it take for you to design my vouchers for me?+
With our in-house design service, you can expect the first proof copy in your inbox in as little as 1 working day, leaving time to make any necessary changes. The sooner you place your order and get your brief across to us, the sooner you’ll have voucher silver foil in your hands.
Can I order a single copy of my vouchers before committing to a larger order?+
Due to the setup time required for foil voucher cards, it is not possible for us to provide a single copy. We do however offer sample packs designed to showcase the quality of our printing, our foil shades, and our paper materials, perfect for giving you an idea of what your finished vouchers could look like. Although these sample packs do not include vouchers, they are perfect for assisting you in your decision making.
What paper type should I choose?+
We offer a huge selection of curated paper options, each especially chosen for metallic foil vouchers. Without knowing your desired aesthetic, it’s hard to advise, therefore we recommend ordering a sample pack so you can see them for yourself. From classics such as silk and uncoated to eco-friendly stocks and coloured cardstocks, the options are virtually endless!
