Foil Invitation Printing
- Our foil invitations are used across weddings, milestone events, and smaller personal runs where detail matters
- Printed and foiled in-house using digital foiling equipment for clean, consistent results
- Browse our enormous metallic foil and curated paper catalogue
If you’re looking for a unique way to invite guests to your wedding, birthday, or baby shower, look no further than our luxury metallic invites. Crafted with exclusive events in mind, we can apply as much or as little metallic foil to your invites as you need, with an enormous metallic colour palette available to browse. Foil is most often used to pick out names, dates, and key details on invitations, where clarity matters just as much as presentation. Applied in the right places, it helps those elements hold their position once printed, especially under different lighting conditions or when viewed at a distance.
Produced in our Yorkshire print shop, we use state-of-the-art digital printing and foiling equipment to ensure maximum precision when it comes to metallic foil invitation printing. Each job is checked before dispatch to make sure foil placement is clean, aligned, and consistent across the full run
Making Your Metallic Invites Shine
At The Foil Printing Co., we specialise in foil printing alongside the finishes that support it. When it comes to custom foil invitations, we offer a wide range of foil colours, paper stocks, and finishing options, along with flexible sizing and custom shapes if you’re working to something more bespoke. You can also split your order across multiple designs, which is useful for things like ceremony and reception invitations where the content needs to vary.
Invitation suites often include multiple pieces, such as the main invite, RSVP cards, and additional inserts. Keeping foil consistent across those elements helps everything feel connected once printed, especially when guests are seeing the full set together rather than as individual pieces.
As far as choosing the right foil colour goes, we recommend ordering a sample pack to see them in person. It includes every foil shade we offer, along with a curated selection of paper stocks and our soft-touch lamination, which makes it easier to decide what works best before placing a full order. If you’re planning to use foil on both sides, you can also choose different foil colours for the front and reverse, depending on how you want the design to read.
Metallic Foil Invitation Printing: It’s all in the Design
Designing custom foil invitations isn’t always straightforward if you’ve not worked with foil before, which is why our in-house pre-press team is on hand to help. If you’d like support with your design, you can configure your order, check out, and send us your detailed design brief along with any content, references, or images you’d like included. From there, we’ll prepare a proof showing how your design will look once printed.
Foil artwork needs to be set up slightly differently from standard print, as it’s applied as a solid, opaque layer rather than ink. That means elements need to be clean, well-defined shapes to ensure they hold properly once printed. At the proof stage, we check foil placement, spacing, and line weight to make sure everything will translate cleanly from screen to print.
If you’re creating your own artwork, we recommend reading our guide on setting up artwork for foil printing before downloading our template for foil invitations. It includes bleed areas and safe zones to help ensure your design is positioned correctly and ready for production.
How to Choose the Right Foil Invitations
With so many paper stocks and foil colours available, it can be tricky to know which combination will suit your invitations best. A lot comes down to the style of your event, the colours you’re working with, and whether you want the foil to feel subtle, classic, bold, or more design-led.
Our team works with these materials every day, so the suggestions below are based on the combinations we know tend to work well in print. They’re here to give you a useful starting point, whether you’re planning wedding invitations, event invites, party stationery, or a full printed invitation suite.

What Makes Our Foil Invitations Different
Foil invitations are often kept, handled, photographed, pinned up, or passed around before the event, so the details really matter. From the size and shape of the invite to the way the foil catches the light, every choice affects how the finished piece feels when it arrives.
At The Foil Printing Co., we focus entirely on foil printing, which means we’re not just offering foil as an add-on. We work with foil artwork, stocks, laminates, folds, perforations, and custom shapes every day, so we can help you choose the setup that suits your invitation design, event style, and practical requirements.
Whether you’re ordering wedding invitations, party invites, launch invitations, corporate event stationery, or something completely bespoke, we can tailor the format, print, foil, and finishing to suit the job.
Invitations Sizes, Formats & Custom Shapes
Foil invitations can be supplied in a range of formats, including portrait, landscape, square, or custom die-cut shapes. This gives you the flexibility to choose a layout that suits the amount of information, the style of the event, and how you want the invitation to be presented.
For portrait and landscape invitations, available sizes include A6, DL, A5, A4, 74 x 210mm, 105 x 279mm, 4 x 6", 5 x 7", or a custom size. Square invitations are available in 148 x 148mm, 210 x 210mm, or a custom size.
For something more unique, custom die-cut shapes can be used to create arches, waves, curved edges, or completely bespoke outlines. This works especially well when the shape of the invitation is part of the overall look, rather than just a container for the design.
Single or Double-Sided Foil Invitations
You can choose foil on one side or both sides of your invitations. Many customers use foil on the front to highlight key details such as names, dates, headings, monograms, or decorative borders, then keep the reverse for supporting information.
Double-sided foil can work well if you want the invitation to feel more substantial, or if the design separates the main event detail from extra information such as timings, venue notes, dress code, or RSVP instructions.
If one side is not foiled, it does not always need to be laminated. Depending on the design, the non-foiled side can be left unlaminated, soft-touch laminated to match the front, or finished with matt or gloss lamination.
Black or CMYK Print
Your invitation artwork can be printed in black or full CMYK colour before the foil is applied. Black print works well for simple, elegant layouts, while CMYK gives more freedom for colour backgrounds, illustrations, patterns, photography, or branded event artwork.
Foil can then be used to bring out the key details, whether that is a name, date, logo, border, heading, icon, or decorative feature.
Why Soft-Touch Lamination is Used
All foil-printed products include soft-touch lamination on the foiled side. This creates a smooth, consistent surface for the foil to adhere to, helping us achieve clean, reliable results.
It also gives the invitation a soft, velvety feel, which works especially well for event stationery where the finish is part of the first impression. If your invitation is foiled on both sides, both sides will be laminated. If only one side is foiled, we can help you choose the most suitable finish for the reverse.
Folded Invitations, Creases & RSVP Tear-Offs
If your invitation needs to include more information, a folded format can be a useful option. Creases can be applied horizontally or vertically, with one or two crease lines depending on the layout.
We can also add perforations for tear-off sections, such as RSVP slips, return details, tickets, vouchers, or detachable information panels. Perforations are available as one, two, or three horizontal or vertical perforation lines, or as a custom setup if your design needs something more specific.
These finishing options are especially helpful for invitations that need to be both attractive and practical.
Rounded Corners & Finishing Options
Rounded corners can be added to soften your invitations and give the finished invite a more polished feel. We offer 6mm or 16mm rounded corners, depending on how subtle or noticeable you want the curve to be.
For more design-led invitations, custom die-cutting can be used to create a completely bespoke outline. This is often a good choice for simpler layouts, where the shape, foil, and paper stock do more of the work without making the artwork feel too busy.
Artwork Supplied by You or Designed by Us
You can supply your own finished artwork, or our team can design your foil invitations for you from a brief. If you already have print-ready artwork, we’ll check the setup before proofing to make sure the foil layer, print artwork, bleed, safe zones, and finishing guides are clear.
If you need design support, we can work from your event details, theme, colour palette, wording, and any brand or wedding stationery references you already have. This can be especially useful if you know the style you want, but need help turning it into artwork that is ready for foil printing.
Can my invitations with foil have more than one foil colour?
Absolutely. While we’re unable to apply more than one foil colour on a single side, you can choose a different foil colour on the front and reverse if you’re opting for double-sided printing. This is often used to separate design elements across each side rather than trying to combine multiple foil colours into one layout.
Does my foil invitation printing include envelopes?
Envelopes aren’t included as standard, but you can add envelopes to your order. We offer a wide range of colours and sizes, along with the option for foiled envelopes if you’d like everything to feel consistent. Most customers choose envelopes separately so they can match them to their invitation design.
Do I have to have laminate on my invitations with foil?
Yes - lamination is required for foil printing. It provides a smooth surface for the foil to adhere to properly, which helps achieve a clean, consistent finish. It also adds durability and enhances the appearance of the foil when the invitations are handled.
Can you design my foil invitations for me?
Of course. Our in-house design team can create your foil invitation artwork for you. Simply select ‘Supply Brief & We Design’ during checkout, place your order, and send over your design brief along with any content, inspiration, or imagery. From there, your assigned designer will prepare a proof for you to review before anything goes into production.
Can I see your foil before ordering?
Yes, and it’s something we strongly recommend if you’re unsure. Our sample pack includes all available foil colours along with a selection of paper stocks and finishes. Foil can appear quite different depending on lighting and background colour, so seeing it in person makes choosing much easier.
What parts of an invitation work best with foil?
Foil tends to work best on the parts people naturally focus on first. This usually includes names, dates, headings, or decorative elements. Using foil in these areas helps them stand out clearly without affecting the readability of the rest of the design.
Will foil affect the readability of my invitation?
It can if it’s overused. Foil works best for emphasis rather than large blocks of text. Key details like names or headings tend to work well in foil, while smaller body text is usually clearer when printed in ink, especially under different lighting conditions.
For a more detailed look at the ins and outs of using foil on invitations, our recent guide discusses when to use foil invitations for weddings and events.
What’s the difference between your foil printing and traditional foiling?
We use digital foiling, which produces a completely flat finish. The foil sits on top of the surface without being pressed into the paper, so there’s no raised or embossed effect. Traditional hot or cold foiling methods can create a slight impression in the stock, whereas digital foil keeps everything smooth and consistent.
For a more comprehensive look at what foil printing means, we wrote all about foil printing and what it actually entails over on our blog.
Can foil be used on small text or fine detail?
It can, but it depends on how it’s set up. Very fine lines or small text may lose clarity once foiled, so slightly thicker, well-defined elements tend to produce a cleaner result. If something needs to be read quickly, it’s usually better to keep it in print.
How does foil look under different lighting?
Foil reacts to light rather than appearing as a fixed colour. It may look more defined under direct lighting and softer in more subdued settings. This is part of what gives foil its appeal, but it’s worth considering when deciding where to apply it within your design.
Absolutely. While we’re unable to apply more than one foil colour on a single side, you can choose a different foil colour on the front and reverse if you’re opting for double-sided printing. This is often used to separate design elements across each side rather than trying to combine multiple foil colours into one layout.
