Recent Foil Coupon Projects

Have a look through a few recent foil coupon projects we’ve printed for shops, salons, spas, restaurants, cafes, hotels, events and everything in between.

Foil Coupons are a great choice when the coupon is being given as a gift, tucked into a card, added to a gift basket, handed out as a prize, or used as part of a promotion. A bit of foil can make the value, logo, code, expiration date or message feel clearer and more special, without making the design feel overdone.

Across these examples, you’ll see all sorts of approaches, from simple gift coupons with a small foil logo to bolder designs where the foil is used for the value, border or main message. Each one has been printed in-house using stocks and foil colors chosen to suit how the coupon will actually be used.

Our recent print gallery shows foil coupons in real life, so you can get a better feel for what works across different styles, businesses and occasions.

Paper Stocks for Metallic Foil Coupons

The stock you choose can make a big difference to how your foil coupons feel when someone receives them. A coupon might be slipped into a gift card, handed over at a checkout counter, added to a treatment package, or sent out as part of a promotion, so it needs to feel sturdy enough to be worth keeping.

Smoother stocks usually give foil the sharpest, brightest finish, which works well for logos, coupon values, codes, borders and small details. Softer or more textured stocks can give the coupon a calmer, more understated look, especially if the design is simple or gift-led. For a closer look at how different materials affect foil, our guide to papers you can print metallic foil to is a useful place to start.

We offer a carefully chosen range of stocks that work well with metallic foil, including smooth coated options, thicker card weights and recycled materials. This helps us keep the foil clean and consistent, whether you’re printing gift coupons, loyalty rewards, prize coupons or promotional offers.

  • Silk

Silk is a smooth, coated stock that gives foil coupons a clean, sharp finish. It works well for smaller details like coupon values, codes, logos, borders or fine text, as the foil applies cleanly on the flatter surface.

The low-sheen finish keeps the coupon looking polished without making the whole design too shiny. Silk coupons are available in five weights ranging from 10 pt to 32 pt, giving you options for simple promotional coupons to thicker gift coupons.

Best for: Gift coupons, salon or spa coupons, and designs with smaller foil details.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend silk when the coupon needs to look neat, clear and gift-ready, especially with values, codes or fine foil detail.

  • Gloss

Gloss is a higher-shine coated stock that makes colors look brighter and more reflective. Paired with foil, it gives coupons a bolder finish, which works well for designs that need to catch attention quickly.

Because both the print and foil reflect light, gloss works best when the foil is kept focused on key details like values, logos, headings or offer messages. Gloss coupons are available in three weights ranging from 10pt to 16pt.

Best for: Promotional coupons, offer cards, and bold designs with bright backgrounds.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend gloss when the coupon needs to feel bright and eye-catching, but we’d keep the foil simple so the details stay easy to read.

  • Uncoated

Uncoated stock has a natural, matte surface that gives foil coupons a softer, more understated look. Because the paper itself doesn’t really reflect light, the foil becomes the main part that catches attention.

The subtle texture can soften very fine foil detail, so uncoated works best with simpler shapes, larger logos, bold values or clean borders rather than tiny text or intricate patterns. Uncoated coupons are available in five weights ranging from 10pt to 32pt.

Best for: Minimal gift coupons, café or restaurant coupons, and simple designs with bold foil details.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend uncoated when you want the coupon to feel calm and considered, but we’d keep the foil artwork simple so the finish stays clean.

  • Recycled

Recycled stock has a natural, uncoated finish with subtle speckling, giving each coupon a slightly varied look. Paired with foil, it creates a clear contrast between the paper and the metallic detail.

Very fine foil can appear a little softer on this stock, so recycled works best with simpler artwork, larger logos, bold values or clean borders. Recycled coupons are available in four weights from 10pt to 32pt.

If sustainability matters for your order, our guide to foil printing and recyclability is a useful place to start.

Best for: Eco-conscious coupons, gift coupons, and simple designs with bold foil details.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend recycled stock when you want a more natural look, with foil used for key details like logos, values or headings.

  • GF Smith Colorplan

Colorplan is a colored uncoated stock, so the paper itself becomes part of the coupon design. It works well when you want the coupon to tie in with brand colors, seasonal offers, gift ranges or a more design-led promotion.

Paired with foil, Colorplan creates strong contrast, especially on darker shades where metallic logos, values, borders or headings can stand out clearly. All 22 Colorplan colors are available in 12pt and 25pt.

For more on the color range, take a look at our guide to the expanded range of Colorplan papers by GF Smith.

Best for: Gift coupons, branded coupons, and color-led promotions.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend darker Colorplan shades when you want the foil to stand out, and lighter or brighter shades when the paper color is doing more of the design work.

    Available Weights

    • 25
  • Color Core

Color core is a triple-layered stock with white outer faces and a colored center, creating an extra-thick 38pt coupon with a visible colored edge. It’s a great choice when you want the coupon to feel more like a gift card than a simple printed offer.

The smooth white faces give the foil a clean surface to apply to, while the colored edge adds something extra when the coupon is held or handed over. It works best with simple layouts, where the thickness, edge color and foil detail all have space to stand out.

You can learn more about how the stock is made in our guide to color core printing.

Best for: Gift coupons, salon or spa coupons, and simple designs with a standout colored edge.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend color core when you want the coupon to feel weighty and gift-ready, with foil kept clean and focused.

Metallic Foil Colors for Coupons

At The Foil Printing Co., we offer 12 metallic foil colors for coupons, from popular finishes like gold and silver to colored and holographic foils.

The foil color you choose can change how your coupon feels when someone receives it. Gold, silver, rose gold and copper are popular for gift coupons and service-based businesses, while colored foils can help match your branding, seasonal offers or campaign style.

Each foil catches the light differently, so it’s worth thinking about what needs to stand out most, whether that’s the coupon value, logo, code, heading or message. For a closer look at the full range, read our guide to metallic foil printing colors.

Gold metallic foil color for vouchers

Gold Foil Vouchers

Gold is the most popular choice for coupons, especially when they’re being sold or given as gifts. It has a strong, warm shine that immediately makes the coupon feel more valuable.

We see this used a lot for things like “$50 coupon” or business names, basically anything that needs to stand out right away.

Best for: Gift coupons, high-end experiences, retail and hospitality.

How to Choose the Right Foil Coupon

With different paper stocks and foil colors available, it can be tricky to know which combination will work best for your coupons. A lot depends on how the coupon will be used, whether it’s being given as a gift or part of a promotion, and which details need to stand out most.

Our team works with foil coupons every day, so the guide below is based on the combinations we know tend to work well in real orders. Use it as a starting point for choosing a foil and stock pairing that suits your coupon, whether it’s for a salon, restaurant, shop, hotel, event, seasonal offer or customer reward.

Digital vs Traditional Foil Printing

When people talk about foil printing, there are two main methods you’ll usually come across: traditional hot foil stamping and digital foiling.

Here at The Foil Printing Co., we specialize in digital foil printing. This process applies foil to printed areas using heat and pressure, without the need for expensive custom metal dies. That means faster setup, more flexibility, and more efficient production across different designs, especially for short or medium foil print runs.

Not sure whether foil is the right choice? Our guide to metallic ink vs. metallic foil explains the difference between the two finishes, and our dedicated blog on what foil printing means is a good place to start if you want the basics first.

Our Approach to Digital Foiling

Not all digital foil processes work the same way. We use a flat foil method, where the base print design is first printed in toner, then covered with a soft-touch laminate to create a smooth, consistent surface for the foil to bond to.

The foil elements are then printed as a second toner layer on top of the soft-touch laminate. During the foiling process, heat and pressure bond the metallic foil precisely to those areas, while the rest of the sheet is left unchanged.

Some print finishers use a raised process, adding another layer beneath the foil to create texture. While this can add depth, it can also limit how designs are applied, especially when working with fine detail or double-sided print.

Our approach is built around accurate foil alignment, consistent coverage, and reliable results across a wide range of designs. To learn more about how our digital foiling process works, take a look at our guide to how foil printing works.

Which Option is Right?

For most projects, digital foiling offers the best balance of quality, cost, flexibility, and turnaround time. It allows us to apply foil cleanly to logos, text, and fine details, while also supporting multiple designs and double-sided foil without expensive extra setup.

Because foil is applied by our experienced finishing team to a controlled, laminated surface, results stay consistent across different designs and quantities, especially where alignment and clarity really matter.

If you’re still unsure, our team will review your artwork at the proof stage and let you know if anything needs adjusting before production begins.

What Makes Our Foil Coupons Different

Foil Coupons need to look good, but they also need to be practical. They might be given as a birthday present, added to a gift basket, sold at a salon reception, handed out as a prize, or used as part of a seasonal offer. That means the size, finish, foil placement and any tear-off sections all need to work properly, not just look nice on screen.

At The Foil Printing Co., we work with foil every day, so we know how to set up coupons that feel ready to hand over, mail out or sell in store. From paper choice and foil color to size, shape, perforations, rounded corners and lamination, we can help you choose the setup that makes sense for how your coupons will actually be used.

Coupon Sizes, Formats & Custom Shapes

Our foil coupons can be printed in landscape, portrait, square or custom shapes. The most common coupon sizes are 4 x 6”, 4 x 8” and 2.75 x 8.5”, but we can print them at almost any size if you need something more specific.

A smaller coupon can work well for simple offers, discount codes or loyalty rewards, while a longer 4 x 8”-style format often suits gift coupons, treatment coupons, meal coupons or anything that needs a little more room for terms, codes or booking details.

For something more unusual, we can also produce custom shapes. This can work well if the coupon needs to match your brand, product, event or packaging.

Single or Double-Sided Foil Coupons

You can choose single or double-sided coupons, depending on how much information you need to include.

Many customers use the front for the main message, value, logo or gift wording, then use the reverse for terms, expiration dates, contact details, booking information or a QR code. Foil can be added to one side or both sides, depending on the design.

If one side is printed but not foiled, or left blank, you can choose whether that side is unlaminated, soft-touch laminated, matte laminated or gloss laminated. The foiled side will always have soft-touch lamination to help the foil apply cleanly.

Black or CMYK Print

Your coupon artwork can be printed in black or full CMYK color before the foil is applied. Black print works well for simple gift coupons, clean layouts and text-led designs, while CMYK gives you more freedom for brand colors, backgrounds, patterns, product imagery or seasonal artwork.

Foil can then be used to highlight the parts people notice first, such as the coupon value, logo, heading, border, offer message or gift wording.

Why Soft-Touch Lamination is Needed

All foiled sides include soft-touch lamination. This gives the foil a smooth, consistent surface to apply to and helps us get a cleaner finish.

If your coupon is printed on both sides but only foiled on one, the non-foiled side can be finished separately. Some customers leave it unlaminated for a simpler finish, while others choose soft-touch, matte or gloss so both sides feel more consistent.

Perforated coupons & Tear-Off Sections

If your coupon includes a tear-off section, we can add up to three vertical or horizontal perforations, or custom perforation placement if your design needs something more specific.

Perforations are useful for claim slips, redemption sections, receipt stubs, raffle entries, booking references, or any part of the coupon that needs to be removed and kept. If you’re using a perforation, it’s worth leaving clear space around the tear line so codes, values, QR codes, barcodes and expiration dates stay easy to read after the section has been removed.

Rounded Corners & Finishing

Rounded corners can be added if you want to soften the shape of your coupons and remove sharp edges. We offer 6mm or 16mm rounded corners, or you can leave the corners square if that suits the design better.

For some designs, rounded corners give the coupon more of a gift-card feel. For others, a clean square edge works better, especially if the coupon is being inserted into envelopes, wallets or presentation sleeves.

Sequential Numbering & Data Merge

If your coupons need unique numbers, codes or references, we can set them up using data merge. This is often used for gift coupon numbers, redemption codes, booking references, raffle entries or tear-off claim sections.

To do this, we’ll need a spreadsheet with the details exactly as they should appear on the coupons. For example, this might be a column of sequential coupon numbers, unique discount codes, names, values or expiration dates.

Please make sure the spreadsheet is checked carefully before sending it to us, as the data supplied will be used to create the final print files. It’s also helpful if your artwork clearly shows where each variable detail should sit, especially if the number or code needs to appear on both the main coupon and a tear-off section.

Coupon Artwork Supplied by You or Designed by Us

You can supply your own print-ready coupon artwork, or our team can design it for you from a brief.

If you already have artwork, we’ll check the setup before proofing to make sure the print artwork, foil layer, bleed, safe zones and any perforation guides are clear. If we design your coupon for you, we’ll work from your logo, wording, brand colors, offer details and any practical information that needs to be included.

Please check your proof carefully before approving it, especially coupon values, codes, expiration dates, terms, phone numbers, URLs and QR codes. Once approved, your proof is what we’ll use for print.

Fast and Reliable Delivery

Once your proof is approved, your order moves into production based on the turnaround time selected at checkout. Your turnaround starts from 10:00 AM EST on the day your proof is approved, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for your proof email.

We ship US orders with UPS, with estimated delivery from dispatch usually taking 1 to 3 business days, depending on your location. Delivery to all corners of the USA starts from $12.95. For more information about turnaround times, rush orders, and shipping prices, head to our delivery and returns information hub.

Every Order Checked by Hand

Foil printing needs a careful eye, which is why every order is checked by a member of our quality control team before it ships.

We produce additional sheets during each run, which we call “overs,” allowing our team to remove setup sheets or imperfect prints during quality control. This helps make sure only the final approved prints arrive with you.

Proofing and Artwork Support

Before printing, you’ll receive a digital proof for approval. This is where we get your artwork ready for print, send over your final proof and flag anything we spot during the pre-press stage. Our team pays close attention to bleed, safe zones and any areas where foil may affect fine detail or small text.

Please review your proof carefully before approving it, as this helps avoid delays and makes sure the final result matches what you’re expecting.

To find out exactly what to look for, read our guide to checking your foil printing proof.

If There’s an Issue

If something isn’t right, contact us with your order details and a description of the issue. Our team will review everything and confirm the next steps.

If we identify a fault on our side, we’ll arrange a reprint and resend the affected items as quickly as possible.

Working With You to Get it Right

Foil printing is a specialized process, and some designs may need small adjustments to get the best result. If that happens, we’ll explain the issue clearly and advise on the most effective fix.

We want the whole process to feel straightforward, from placing your order to receiving your finished prints.

Artwork Requirements

Setting up artwork for foil coupons is mainly about showing us two things clearly: what you’d like printed, and what you’d like foiled. Your CMYK artwork shows the printed coupon design, while your foil layer shows exactly where the metallic finish should appear.

Once those parts are separated and your order has been placed, our team can check your file, prepare your proof, and get your coupons moving through production.

To make things easier, you can also start with our voucher design template, which is already set up with the correct size, bleed, and safe zones.

Foil Artwork Checklist

To help us set up your foil coupons smoothly, please supply your artwork using the following guidelines:

✔️Add 2mm bleed around your artwork, especially if backgrounds, colors, patterns or borders run to the edge.

✔️Set all printed artwork to CMYK.

✔️Use a minimum resolution of 300 DPI for image-based artwork.

✔️Supply files as PDF, JPG, or fully packaged AI files.

✔️Keep important text, logos, coupon values, codes, expiration dates, terms and contact details within a 3mm safe zone from the cut edge.

✔️Supply foil elements separately from your CMYK artwork, ideally on a separate page or artboard.

✔️Set foil elements as 100% K black. This black layer will not print as black ink, it simply shows us where the foil should be applied.

Setting Up Your Foil Layer

Your foil layer tells us where the metallic finish should go. For coupons, this is often used for logos, values, headings, borders, gift messages, icons, codes or offer details.

If your coupon is single-sided, we’ll need:

  • The printed artwork

  • The foil layer for that side

If your coupon is double-sided, we’ll need:

  • Front printed artwork

  • Front foil layer

  • Back printed artwork

  • Back foil layer

If only one side of your coupon is being foiled, you only need to supply a foil layer for that side.

Perforations and Tear-Off Areas

If your coupon includes a tear-off section, please show the perforation line clearly using a 1 pt magenta line on a separate layer or separate page.

Leave enough space around the perforation so important details are not too close to the tear line. This is especially important for coupon codes, expiration dates, terms, QR codes, barcodes or anything the customer needs to keep readable after the section has been torn off.

Foil Coupon Artwork Tips from Our Team

Our team checks foil coupon artwork every day, so we know the little design choices that can make a coupon easier to read, easier to use and easier to hand over.

For the best results:

  • Use foil for the details that make the coupon feel important, such as the logo, coupon value, heading, gift message or border.

  • Keep practical details like codes, expiration dates, terms, barcodes and QR codes printed rather than foiled, so they stay clear and easy to scan.

  • If your coupon has a tear-off section, keep the code, value or claim details well away from the perforation line.

  • Avoid putting foil over areas that may need to be written on, stamped or marked in store.

  • Keep small print simple. coupon terms, booking instructions and redemption details are usually better as printed text, not foil.

  • Use foil as a highlight rather than covering too much of the coupon, especially if the design already includes a lot of information.

  • Make sure the main value or offer is easy to spot at a glance, whether that’s $25, 20% off, a free treatment, a meal coupon or a gift card message.

  • Keep foil, print artwork and any perforation guides clearly separated.

Before You Send Your coupon Artwork

Before uploading your files, please check that your foil layer is separate, foil is supplied as 100% K black, important coupon details sit inside the 3mm safe zone, bleed has been added where needed, and any perforation lines are clearly marked in magenta.

Need a Hand?

If you’re unsure whether your artwork is set up correctly, let us know in your artwork email and a member of our team will take a look before production begins. We’ll let you know if anything needs adjusting before your proof is prepared. Before that, why not read our guide to setting up your foil artwork?

If you need help designing your foil coupons, select the ‘Supply Brief & We Design’ option at checkout and send us a design brief instead of finished artwork. From there, we’ll pair you with a designer to work with you to create your ideal foil coupons.
