Paper Stocks for Metallic Foil Flyers

The paper stock you choose is crucial to how your metallic foil flyers look, feel, and perform in real-world use. Flyers are designed to be picked up, handed out, mailed, or displayed, so the stock needs to suit both the design and the way the flyer will be used.

Smooth, well-coated stocks tend to give the sharpest and most reflective foil finish, while softer or more textured stocks create a more understated effect. If you’d like a closer look at how foil behaves on different materials, our guide to papers you can print metallic foil on to explains how paper choice can affect the finished result.

We offer a carefully selected range of flyer stocks, including smooth coated options, thicker high-end stocks, and recycled materials. Each has been chosen for its compatibility with digital foil printing, helping us achieve clean foil edges, reliable adhesion, and a consistent finish across different flyer designs.

  • Silk

Silk is a smooth, coated stock that gives your metallic foil flyers a reliable finish every time. Probably the #1 choice for flyers, its flat surface helps foil apply with sharp edges and strong reflectivity, making it arguably the best choice for detailed layouts, smaller foil elements, and designs where key information really needs to stand out.

The low-sheen background keeps the overall look balanced, so printed colors still feel polished while the foil catches the light. This makes silk a versatile option for flyers that need to feel professional, eye-catching, and easy to read. Silk flyers are available in five weights ranging from 10pt to 32pt.

Best for: Event flyers, promotional handouts, and colorful designs with detailed foil elements.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend silk when a flyer needs sharp foil detail, strong printed color, or a polished finish that still feels practical for everyday distribution.

  • Gloss

Gloss is a higher-shine coated stock that gives metallic foil flyers a brighter, more reflective finish. It enhances printed color and works especially well for bold layouts where the flyer needs to grab attention quickly.

Because both the print and foil reflect light, gloss works best when the foil is used with a little restraint. Clear spacing, strong contrast, and simple foil details will help the flyer feel bright and eye-catching without making the layout too busy. Gloss flyers are available in three weights from 10pt to 16pt, giving you a choice of lighter handouts to sturdier promotional pieces.

Best for: Promotional flyers, nightlife or event flyers, and bold designs with vibrant backgrounds.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend gloss when a flyer needs maximum color impact, but we’d keep the foil focused on key details such as headings, logos, offers, or dates so the message stays clear.

  • Uncoated

Uncoated stock has a natural, matte surface that gives metallic foil flyers a softer, more understated feel. Because the paper itself doesn’t reflect much light, the foil becomes the main point of focus against the more muted background.

The subtle texture can soften the edges of very fine foil details, so uncoated stock works best with simpler shapes, larger elements, and designs that don’t rely on tiny metallic lines or intricate lettering. Uncoated flyers are available in five weights ranging from 10pt to 32pt, giving you options for anything from lighter handouts to thicker, more substantial promotional pieces.

Best for: Minimal flyers, boutique event flyers, and natural or design-led promotions.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend uncoated stock when you want the flyer to feel understated and natural, but we’d keep the foil artwork simple so the finish stays clean.

  • Recycled

Recycled stock has a natural, uncoated finish with subtle speckling throughout the fibers, giving each flyer a slightly varied, organic look. When paired with foil, it creates a clear contrast between the textured paper and the reflective metallic finish.

As with other textured stocks, very fine foil edges can appear a little softer, so recycled stock works best with simpler artwork, larger foil elements, and designs that don’t rely on tiny metallic detail. Recycled flyers are available in four weights ranging from 10 pt to 32 pt, giving you options for anything from everyday handouts to thicker, more substantial promotional pieces. If sustainability is part of your print decision, our guide on whether foil printing is recyclable explains how foil print fits into the recycling process.

Best for: Eco-conscious flyers, natural brand promotions, and simple layouts with bold foil details.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend recycled stock when you want the flyer to feel natural, thoughtful, or more sustainable, with foil used for key details such as logos, headings, borders, or simple decorative elements.

  • GF Smith Colorplan

Colorplan is a high-end uncoated stock available in 22 different colors. It works especially well for color-led promotions, launch materials, event flyers, and minimal layouts where the stock choice helps set the tone before any print or foil is added.

When combined with foil, Colorplan creates strong contrast, especially on darker shades where metallic headings, logos, dates, borders, or key messages can stand out clearly. Its subtle texture can soften very fine foil edges, so it works best with confident layouts, simpler foil detail, and designs where the colored paper is part of the overall impact.

All 22 Colorplan colors are available in 12pt and 25pt. If you’d like to see more about the range, our guide to the expanded range of Colorplan papers by GF Smith covers the colors available in more detail.

Best for: Color-led flyers, creative event promotions, and minimal designs with bold foil detail.

Expert Insight: We’d usually recommend darker Colorplan shades when you want the foil to be the main feature, while brighter or lighter shades work well for more playful, design-led flyer campaigns.

  • Color Core

Color Core is a triple-layered stock with white outer faces and a colored center, creating an extra-thick 38 pt flyer with a visible colored edge. It’s available with all 22 Colorplan core colors, so the edge can be matched to your brand, event, or campaign style.

The smooth white outer layers allow for clean foil application, while the colored edge adds extra depth when the flyer is handled. Because the stock is already bold, color core works best with simple foil layouts and confident design details. Our guide to colour core printing explains how this layered stock creates its colored edge.

Best for: High-end event flyers, launch handouts, VIP event flyers, and bold promotional flyers where the edge detail helps make the flyer feel more substantial and memorable.

Expert Insight: The thickness and colored edge are doing a lot of work here, so we recommend keeping the foil clean and focused. Think simple logos, borders, or key details rather than busy foil coverage.

Metallic Foil Colors for Flyers

At The Foil Printing Co., we offer 12 metallic foil colors for flyers, from popular finishes such as gold and silver to colored and holographic foils for more unique campaign designs.

Each foil color catches the light differently, which can change how quickly key details are noticed. On flyers, this really matters, the foil might be used to highlight an event name, offer, date, logo, headline, or callout, so the color needs to work clearly against the background.

A wider foil color range gives you more freedom to match your branding, campaign visuals, or event theme, rather than adapting your design around a limited set of standard metallics. For a closer look at the colors available, read our guide to metallic foil printing colors.

Gold Foil Flyers

Gold is the foil we see used most often on flyers, and for good reason. It’s bright, reflective and easy to pick up at a glance, which is exactly what you want when someone may only look for a second or two.

It works especially well for headings, prices, event names, dates or key messages, basically anything you want people to notice first.

Best for: Headlines, offers, event titles and high-end promotions.

How to Choose the Right Foil Flyers

With different paper stocks and foil colors available, it can be tricky to know which combination will work best for your flyer. A lot depends on how the flyer will be used, how quickly it needs to grab attention, and which details need to stand out first.

Our team works with metallic foil flyers every day, so the guide below is based on the combinations we know tend to work well in real campaigns. Use it as a starting point for choosing a foil and stock pairing that suits your design, whether you’re promoting an event, offer, launch, product, menu, or campaign.

Digital vs Traditional Foil Printing

When people talk about foil printing, there are two main methods you’ll usually come across: traditional hot foil stamping and digital foiling.

Here at The Foil Printing Co., we specialize in digital foil printing. This process applies foil to printed areas using heat and pressure, without the need for expensive custom metal dies. That means faster setup, more flexibility, and more efficient production across different designs, especially for short or medium foil print runs.

Not sure whether foil is the right choice? Our guide to metallic ink vs. metallic foil explains the difference between the two finishes, and our dedicated blog on what foil printing means is a good place to start if you want the basics first.

Our Approach to Digital Foiling

Not all digital foil processes work the same way. We use a flat foil method, where the base print design is first printed in toner, then covered with a soft-touch laminate to create a smooth, consistent surface for the foil to bond to.

The foil elements are then printed as a second toner layer on top of the soft-touch laminate. During the foiling process, heat and pressure bond the metallic foil precisely to those areas, while the rest of the sheet is left unchanged.

Some print finishers use a raised process, adding another layer beneath the foil to create texture. While this can add depth, it can also limit how designs are applied, especially when working with fine detail or double-sided print.

Our approach is built around accurate foil alignment, consistent coverage, and reliable results across a wide range of designs. To learn more about how our digital foiling process works, take a look at our guide to how foil printing works.

Which Option is Right?

For most projects, digital foiling offers the best balance of quality, cost, flexibility, and turnaround time. It allows us to apply foil cleanly to logos, text, and fine details, while also supporting multiple designs and double-sided foil without expensive extra setup.

Because foil is applied by our experienced finishing team to a controlled, laminated surface, results stay consistent across different designs and quantities, especially where alignment and clarity really matter.

If you’re still unsure, our team will review your artwork at the proof stage and let you know if anything needs adjusting before production begins.

What Makes Our Foil Flyers Different

Foil flyers need to grab attention quickly, but they still need to be clear, readable, and practical for the way they’ll be used. Whether they’re being handed out, mailed, displayed, folded, or used as part of a campaign, the format and finish both play a big role in the final result.

At The Foil Printing Co., we focus specifically on foil printing, which means we understand how to get the best from metallic detail on promotional print. From flyer size and orientation to foil placement, paper choice, lamination, folds, perforations, rounded corners, and custom shapes, we can help you create flyers that feel more considered than standard handouts.

Flyer Sizes, Orientations & Custom Shapes

Our foil flyers are available in landscape, portrait, button, square, or custom die-cut shapes. Popular portrait and landscape footprints include 3 x 4 in., 4 x 6 in., 4 x 8 in., 4.25 x 5.5 in., 5 x 7 in., 5 x 8 in. and 5.5 x 8.5 in., with the dimensions reversed for landscape layouts. Square flyers are available in 6 x 6 in. and 8.25 x 8.25 in., and custom sizes are also available if you need something more specific.

Custom die-cut shapes can be useful when the format itself is part of the idea, such as a shape that follows your branding, product, event theme, or campaign artwork. It’s a good way to make a flyer feel more distinctive before the design is even read.

Single or Double-Sided Foil Flyers

Foil can be applied to one side or both sides of your flyers. Many designs use foil on the front to highlight key details such as the headline, logo, event name, date, offer, price, or callout, while the reverse is used for supporting information.

Double-sided foil gives you more room to create impact across both sides, especially for high-end campaigns, launch materials, menus, event flyers, or handouts where the flyer will be viewed from more than one angle.

If one side is not foiled, you can choose to leave it unlaminated, match the front with soft-touch lamination, or finish it with matte or gloss lamination.

Black or CMYK Print

Your flyer artwork can be printed in black or full CMYK color before the foil is applied. Black print works well for clean, text-led layouts, while CMYK gives more freedom for color backgrounds, imagery, illustrations, gradients, campaign visuals, and branded artwork.

Foil can then be used to lift the most important parts of the design, such as logos, headlines, dates, prices, offers, icons, borders, or key promotional messages.

Why Soft-Touch Lamination is Used

All foiled sides include soft-touch lamination. This creates a smooth, consistent surface for the foil to adhere to, helping us achieve clean, reliable results.

It also gives the finished flyer a smooth feel in hand, which is useful for promotional print that people will pick up, handle, pass around, or keep. If only one side of your flyer is foiled, the reverse can be finished separately depending on the look and feel you want.

Folded Flyers, Creases & Perforations

If your flyer needs to hold more information, we can add one to three vertical or horizontal creases to create folded formats. Popular options include simple folded flyers, 4 x 8 in. folded flyers, and gate fold layouts.

We can also add one to three vertical or horizontal perforations, or custom perforation placement if your design includes tear-off areas. This can be useful for vouchers, reply slips, tickets, discount codes, forms, or detachable campaign details.

Rounded Corners & Custom Finishing

Rounded corners can be added to soften the look of your flyers and give them a more polished feel. We offer 6mm or 16mm rounded corners, depending on whether you want the effect to be subtle or more noticeable.

For more distinctive campaigns, custom die-cutting can be used to create a custom flyer shape. This works especially well for simpler layouts, where the format itself helps the flyer stand out without making the design too busy.

Flyer Artwork Supplied by You or Designed by Us

You can supply your own print-ready flyer artwork, or our team can design your foil flyers for you from a brief.

If you already have artwork, we’ll check the setup before proofing to make sure the print artwork, foil layer, bleed, safe zones, and any crease, perforation, or cut guides are clear. If you need design support, we can work from your brand, campaign, event, offer, or product details to create artwork that is ready for foil flyer printing.

Fast and Reliable Delivery

Once your proof is approved, your order moves into production based on the turnaround time selected at checkout. Your turnaround starts from 10:00 AM EST on the day your proof is approved, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for your proof email.

We ship US orders with UPS, with estimated delivery from dispatch usually taking 1 to 3 business days, depending on your location. Delivery to all corners of the USA starts from $12.95. For more information about turnaround times, rush orders, and shipping prices, head to our delivery and returns information hub.

Every Order Checked by Hand

Foil printing needs a careful eye, which is why every order is checked by a member of our quality control team before it ships.

We produce additional sheets during each run, which we call “overs,” allowing our team to remove setup sheets or imperfect prints during quality control. This helps make sure only the final approved prints arrive with you.

Proofing and Artwork Support

Before printing, you’ll receive a digital proof for approval. This is where we get your artwork ready for print, send over your final proof and flag anything we spot during the pre-press stage. Our team pays close attention to bleed, safe zones and any areas where foil may affect fine detail or small text.

Please review your proof carefully before approving it, as this helps avoid delays and makes sure the final result matches what you’re expecting.

To find out exactly what to look for, read our guide to checking your foil printing proof.

If There’s an Issue

If something isn’t right, contact us with your order details and a description of the issue. Our team will review everything and confirm the next steps.

If we identify a fault on our side, we’ll arrange a reprint and resend the affected items as quickly as possible.

Working With You to Get it Right

Foil printing is a specialized process, and some designs may need small adjustments to get the best result. If that happens, we’ll explain the issue clearly and advise on the most effective fix.

We want the whole process to feel straightforward, from placing your order to receiving your finished prints.

Artwork Requirements

Setting up artwork for foil flyers is mainly about showing us two things clearly: what you’d like printed, and what you’d like foiled. Your CMYK artwork shows the printed flyer design, while your foil layer shows exactly where the metallic finish should appear.

Once those parts are separated and your order has been placed, our team can check your file, prepare your proof, and get your flyers moving through production.

To make things easier, you can also start with our flyer design template, which is already set up with the correct size, bleed, and safe zones.

Foil Artwork Checklist

To help us set up your foil flyers smoothly, please supply your artwork using the following guidelines:

✔️Add 2mm bleed around your artwork, especially if colors, images, patterns or backgrounds run to the edge.

✔️Set all printed artwork to CMYK.

✔️Use a minimum resolution of 300 DPI for image-based artwork.

✔️Supply your files as PDF, JPG or fully packaged AI files.

✔️Keep important text, logos, dates, prices, offers, QR codes, contact details and foreground images within a 3mm safe zone from the cut edge.

✔️Supply foil elements separately from your CMYK artwork, ideally on a separate page or artboard.

✔️Set foil elements as 100% K black. This black layer will not print as black ink, it simply shows us where the foil should be applied.

Setting Up Your Foil Layer

Your foil layer tells us where the metallic should go. For flyers, this is often used for headlines, logos, prices, event names, dates, icons, borders, callouts, offers or key promotional messages.

For a single-sided foil flyer, we’ll need:

  • The printed artwork

  • The foil layer for that side

For a double-sided foil flyer, we’ll need:

  • Front printed artwork

  • Front foil layer

  • Back printed artwork

  • Back foil layer

If only one side of your flyer is being foiled, you only need to supply a foil layer for that side. The main thing is that the foil artwork is kept separate and supplied clearly, so our team can see exactly what needs the metallic finish.

Foil Flyer Artwork Tips from Our Team

Our team checks foil flyer artwork every day, so we know which small setup details make the biggest difference once the flyers are printed, handled and read.

For the best results:

  • Use foil for the details people need to notice first, such as headlines, offers, event names, dates, logos or key callouts.

  • Avoid very fine lines or tiny text in foil, especially for terms, addresses, menus, QR codes, small prices or longer body copy.

  • Keep foil elements at least 3mm away from trim edges to help prevent an uneven finish.

  • Use strong contrast between the foil and background so key information can be picked up quickly.

  • Avoid placing tiny foil details directly over printed artwork that needs perfect alignment.

  • Choose smoother stocks for finer foil detail, as textured stocks can soften the finish.

  • If your flyer includes a custom shape, show the cut line using a 1 pt magenta line on a separate layer or separate page.

Before You Send Your Artwork:

Before uploading your files, please check that:

✔️ Your foil layer is separate from your CMYK artwork.

✔️ Foil is supplied as 100% K black.

✔️ Important text, dates, prices, offers, QR codes and contact details sit inside the 3mm safe zone.

✔️ 2mm bleed has been added where needed.

✔️ Very fine lines or small text have been avoided in foil where possible.

✔️ Any cut, crease, perforation or drill guides are shown separately in magenta.

✔️ Images are at least 300 DPI.

Need a Hand?

If you’re unsure whether your artwork is set up correctly, let us know in your artwork email and a member of our team will take a look before production begins. We’ll let you know if anything needs adjusting before your proof is prepared. Before that, you can also read our guide to setting up your foil artwork?

If you need help designing your foil flyers, select the ‘Supply Brief & We Design’ option at checkout and send us a design brief instead of finished artwork. From there, we’ll pair you with a designer to work with you to create your ideal foil flyers.
