Recent Foil Art Print Projects

Explore a selection of recent foil art prints produced by our team across a range of styles, from bold, full-foil designs to more restrained pieces where metallic detail is used with precision.

Art style and colour establish contrast and depth within a design. Metallic foil builds on this by introducing reflectivity, enhancing specific elements while adding another layer of visual interest.

These prints demonstrate how foil can be applied in different ways, whether to create strong visual contrast and highlight key elements within the artwork, or introduce depth and variation across the surface. You’ll also see a range of approaches in use, from bold, high-impact designs to more subtle applications across different sizes, formats, and compositions.

Some designs are created to stand out immediately, using larger areas of reflective foil to maximise impact. Others take a more controlled approach, applying foil selectively to typography, illustration, or finer details to maintain balance and clarity.

Each piece has been produced in-house using carefully selected paper stocks and foil finishes, showing how material, colour, and application combine in the final print.

Our gallery showcases a selection of previous projects produced by our team, helping you explore how different combinations of artwork, paper stock, and foil finish translate into finished foil art prints while providing inspiration for your own designs.

Paper Stocks for Metallic Foil Art Prints

While the foil itself is applied to a soft-touch laminated surface, the paper stock still plays an important role in how the finished art print is perceived. Factors such as paper colour, thickness, texture, and overall material character all contribute to the final presentation.

For example, a bright white silk stock can create a cleaner, more contemporary appearance, while recycled and uncoated papers introduce a more natural aesthetic through their paper tone and surface texture. Premium options such as Colorplan and Colourcore allow the material itself to become a more prominent design feature, adding colour, weight, and visual presence beyond the printed artwork alone.

Every stock in our paper range has been carefully selected and tested for compatibility with our digital foiling process, ensuring reliable production while giving artists and designers the flexibility to choose a material that complements their artwork.

  • Silk

Silk is a bright white, coated stock that offers a clean and contemporary foundation for artwork. Its smooth surface helps colours appear vibrant, while details remain well defined. It’s a popular choice for both illustration and graphic-led designs.

It is considered the most technically capable stock in our range. What that means is that it suits an incredibly broad range of artwork styles. Whether you're producing detailed illustrations, comic artwork, graphic prints, atmospheric scenes, anime-inspired artwork, or more commercial designs, silk provides a clean and consistent foundation that allows the artwork to speak for itself.

Best for: General-purpose art prints, artist collections, mixed portfolios, and artwork where paper stock is the most flexible factor.

Expert Insight: If you're unsure which stock to choose, silk is usually the strongest starting point thanks to its ability to complement almost any artwork style.

  • Gloss

Gloss is designed for artwork that relies on colour, contrast, and visual intensity. Its higher-shine coated surface helps colours appear brighter and more saturated, making it effective for artwork built around strong palettes, graphic compositions, and bold illustrative styles.

Where silk provides a more neutral foundation, gloss actively enhances the vibrancy of the printed artwork. This makes it well suited to poster-inspired designs, comic artwork, pop culture illustration, contemporary graphics, and prints where immediate visual impact is part of the creative intention.

Best for: Artwork intended to stand out in busy visual environments, including convention prints, cover art, promotional visuals, and display-focused artwork.

Expert Insight: Gloss performs best when colour and visual energy are central to the artwork. Designs that rely on vibrancy, contrast, and immediate impact often benefit most from the intensity the stock provides.

    Available Weights

    • 350
  • Uncoated

Uncoated stock offers a cleaner, more restrained appearance than coated alternatives. Its bright white base provides excellent contrast while producing a softer overall presentation, helping artwork feel less commercial and more traditionally print-focused.

Compared to gloss and silk, uncoated stock has a more subdued visual character, with less surface reflectivity and a calmer overall appearance. This makes it well suited to artwork where composition, illustration, typography, or subject matter are intended to carry the piece without relying on vibrancy or visual intensity.

Best for: Artwork that invites exploration, allowing composition, mood, and finer details to emerge gradually rather than relying on immediate visual impact.

Expert Insight: Uncoated stock allows composition, mood, and visual storytelling to carry the viewing experience, with a restrained presentation often creating a richer connection between the artwork and the viewer than a higher-impact finish.

  • Recycled

Recycled stock combines a natural appearance with subtle visible fibres and tonal variation throughout the sheet. The paper introduces its own character into the finished print, creating a visual relationship between the artwork, paper stock, and metallic foil.

This makes recycled stock well suited to artwork where authenticity, materiality, and natural imperfections contribute positively to the overall composition. The warmer paper tone and organic appearance can add depth to artwork that draws inspiration from nature, heritage, craftsmanship, or traditional artistic techniques. Alongside its environmental credentials, the natural variation within the stock ensures no two prints feel entirely identical, helping each piece develop its own subtle identity.

Best for: Artwork where the paper is intended to play an active role in the finished piece, including nature-inspired prints, heritage artwork, environmentally conscious creative projects, and designs that embrace the natural appearance of the stock.

Expert Insight: Recycled stock combines creative and environmental benefits, allowing artists to embrace the natural character of the material while making more conscious choices around sustainability.

  • GF Smith Colorplan

Colorplan allows the paper itself to become a deliberate design element. Available in 22 carefully selected colours, ranging from subtle whites and neutrals through to rich jewel tones, heritage-inspired shades, and deep near-black stocks, it creates opportunities to build contrast and visual interest through the stock as well as the artwork and foil.

Your chosen Colorplan stock becomes the foundation of the finished piece from the outset. The colour defines the appearance of the front, reverse, and exposed edges, allowing the paper itself to contribute to the overall aesthetic of the artwork. The paper adds another dimension to the finished print, introducing texture that can be appreciated both visually and through touch.

Best for: Artwork where the paper choice forms part of the creative direction, allowing colour, texture, and composition to be influenced by the stock itself. Often chosen for limited editions, exhibition pieces, and projects where the physical qualities of the print are intended to contribute to the final artwork.

Expert Insight: With Colorplan, simple artwork can often have a greater impact because the coloured stock and textured surface carry more of the visual workload than a silk or uncoated stock. This means fewer printed elements may be needed to create a compelling finished piece.

    Available Weights

  • Colourcore

Colour core is an ultra-thick 800gsm stock featuring white outer surfaces and a coloured centre layer visible around the edge of the print. Combining the flexibility of a traditional white stock with the additional visual interest of coloured edges, it creates artwork with considerably more weight and presence.

The bright white surface provides a neutral foundation for artwork and foil, allowing designs to be created with the same flexibility as a traditional white stock. The coloured core introduces additional visual interest around the edge of the print without influencing the artwork itself, making Colourcore a strong choice for artists who want material presence without adapting their design to a coloured paper surface.

Best for: Artwork where physical presence is intended to contribute to the finished piece, including collector editions, exhibition prints, display artwork, and projects designed to feel more substantial than a traditional art print.

Expert Insight: Many artists choose Colourcore for limited editions, convention exclusives, and collector releases where the physical format is intended to elevate the perceived value of the artwork. The 800gsm stock and coloured edges help reinforce the feeling that the piece is something worth keeping.

Metallic Foil Colours for Art Prints

At The Foil Printing Co, we offer a range of 12 metallic foil colours, from classic metals such as gold, silver  and copper bronze through to vibrant coloured foils and holographic finishes.

For art prints, foil colour plays a significant role in how the finished piece is experienced. Different foils can influence contrast, mood, visual focus, and the relationship between the artwork and its surroundings. Gold may introduce warmth and prestige, while silver can create a cleaner, more contemporary appearance. Coloured and holographic foils can introduce energy, movement, or visual drama depending on the artwork style.

Each foil reflects light differently, meaning the same design can be explored artistically in different ways simply by changing the foil selection. This allows artists to use foil as part of the creative process, helping reinforce atmosphere, subject matter, or intended presentation.

With 12 foils available, artists have the creative freedom to choose a finish that complements the artwork instead of adapting the artwork to suit a limited foil range.

Gold Foil Art Prints

Gold foil remains one of our most popular finishes, producing a warm, reflective appearance that naturally draws attention within an artwork. Long associated with luxury, prestige, and ornamentation, it is often used to highlight focal points, decorative detailing, and areas intended to feel rich, significant, or visually important.

Gold foil is effective within fantasy artwork, mythology-inspired designs, zodiac artwork, celestial illustration, and compositions featuring warm light sources such as sunlight, candlelight, lanterns, or magical effects. Its warmer metallic character helps illuminated areas and finer details separate naturally from darker surrounding tones while reinforcing the atmosphere of the piece.

Best for: Illustrative detail, typography-led prints, decorative framing, darker colour palettes, and classical artwork styles

Digital vs Traditional Foil Printing

When talking about foil printing, there are two main methods you’ll have likely come across: traditional hot foil stamping and digital foiling.

Here at The Foil Printing Co., we specialise in digital foil printing. This process applies foil to printed areas using heat and pressure, without the need for costly custom metal dies. It allows for faster setup, greater flexibility, and more efficient production across different designs and short or medium foil print runs.

Not sure whether foil is the right choice? Find out whether you should be opting for metallic ink or metallic foil in our guide to metallic ink vs metallic foil, but not before learning exactly what foil printing means in our dedicated blog.

Our Approach to Digital Foiling

Not all digital foil processes are the same. We use a flat foil method, where the base (print) design is first printed in toner, then covered with a soft-touch laminate to create a velvety, smooth, consistent surface for the foil to adhere to.

Foil elements are then printed as a second toner layer on top of the soft-touch laminate. During the foiling process, heat and pressure bond the metallic foil precisely to these areas, while the rest of the sheet remains unchanged.

Some print finishers use a raised process, adding an additional layer beneath the foil to create texture. While this can introduce depth, it can also limit how the designs are applied - particularly for fine detail or double-sided print.

Our approach is designed to prioritise accurate foil alignment, consistent coverage, and reliable results across a wide range of designs. To learn more about our approach to digital foiling, head across to our guide to how foil printing works

Which Option is Right?

For most projects, digital foiling provides the best balance of quality, cost, flexibility, and turnaround time. It allows for precise application on logos and fine detail, while also supporting multiple and double-sided foil designs without additional costly setup.

Because foil is applied by our experienced finishing team to a controlled, laminated surface, results remain consistent across different designs and quantities - particularly where alignment and clarity are paramount.

If you’re still scratching your head, our team will review your artwork at the proof stage and advise where needed.

What Makes Our Foil Art Prints Different

Creating successful foil art prints involves more than simply applying metallic foil to your artwork. The final result is influenced by the materials selected, the way foil is incorporated into the design, and how the finished piece is produced and presented.

At The Foil Printing Co, we offer a wide range of materials, finishes, and production options, while providing guidance based on what will achieve the strongest finished result for your artwork.

Whether you're producing a one-off display piece, a collector edition, convention artwork, exhibition prints, or a commercial art range, our approach is centred around giving artists greater creative control. From custom sizing and specialist paper stocks through to foil placement, finishing options, and material selection. Every project can be tailored to suit the artwork rather than forcing the artwork to suit the print specification.

Sizes & Custom Shapes

Foil art prints are available in a range of popular sizes, including A3, A4, A5, A6, DL, and fully custom dimensions. Whether you're creating smaller collector prints, convention artwork, retail products, or larger display pieces, selecting the right size plays an important role in how the finished artwork is presented and experienced.

Alongside traditional portrait, landscape, and square formats, we also offer custom sizing for artwork that doesn't naturally fit standard dimensions. This gives artists greater freedom to create prints around the composition itself rather than adapting the composition to suit a predetermined print format.

For projects where the format forms part of the creative concept, we also offer custom-shaped art prints through our die-cutting service. While less common than conventional print formats, bespoke shapes can create memorable collector pieces, promotional artwork, and limited edition releases that stand apart from traditional rectangular prints. Rounded corner finishing is also available at 6mm and 16mm, allowing artists to soften the presentation of a print while creating a refined finished piece.

Single or Double-Sided Foil

Many foil art prints are single sided prints, allowing metallic elements to enhance the main artwork while leaving the reverse side clean and underutilised. However, foil can also be applied to both sides, creating additional opportunities for artist branding, edition numbering, supporting artwork, decorative motifs, or other details that form part of the overall presentation.

Double-sided foil is often used for collector editions, convention artwork, and limited releases where the reverse side is treated as part of the finished piece rather than simply the back of the print.

Some artists use the reverse to showcase alternate versions of the same artwork, experiment with different foil colours, or separate line work and finished illustration across both sides. This approach allows the print itself to become a more interactive and collectable object while maintaining a cohesive visual identity throughout.

Whether that means a classic gold foil artwork paired with subtle branding on the reverse or a more experimental combination of finishes, each side can be tailored independently to support the intended presentation.

Why Soft-Touch Lamination is Required

Every foil art print is finished with a soft-touch laminate before foil is applied. This provides the smooth, consistent surface needed to achieve clean foil application and reliable production results across every print.

Beyond supporting the foil itself, soft-touch lamination also helps protect the printed artwork from handling while giving the finished piece a smoother and more refined feel. The result is a surface that not only supports metallic foil application, but also enhances the overall presentation of the artwork.

While often overlooked, the finishing materials used beneath the foil play an important role in the final result. Soft-touch lamination helps ensure the artwork, foil, and paper stock work together as a complete finished piece.

Working With You to Get it Right

Foil printing is a specialised process, and some designs may require adjustment to achieve the best result. Where this happens, we’ll always explain the issue and advise on the most effective solution.

We aim to ensure you’re happy with our entire process, from placing your order to receiving your prints.

Artwork Requirements

Preparing artwork for foil art prints is largely about clearly separating your printed design from the areas intended to receive metallic foil. This allows us to accurately interpret your artwork, produce a proof for approval, and ensure the finished print reflects your intended design.

The checklist below outlines the key requirements we recommend following when preparing files for production. Once submitted, our team will review your artwork, check it against our print specifications, and prepare a digital proof so you can confirm everything looks correct before printing begins.

If you're creating artwork specifically for foil printing, we also provide art print templates containing the correct dimensions, bleed requirements, and safe zones to help simplify the setup process.

Foil Artwork Checklist

✔ Add 2mm bleed around your artwork. This is important where printed elements extend to the edge of your finished art print.

✔ Set all printed artwork to CMYK colour mode.

✔ Use a minimum resolution of 300DPI for any image-based artwork.

✔ Supply your files as PDF, JPG, or fully packaged Adobe Illustrator files.

✔ Keep all important artwork elements, signatures, logos, typography and focal details within a 3mm safe zone of the trim edge.

✔ Supply foil elements on a separate page or artboard from your CMYK artwork.

✔ Set all foil elements to 100% K black. This layer will not print in black and is used solely to indicate where metallic foil should be applied.

Setting Up Your Foil Layer

Your foil layer tells us exactly where metallic foil should be applied within your artwork. This could include typography, borders, decorative details, focal elements, highlights, symbols, or any other areas intended to receive a metallic finish.

To prepare your files, supply your printed artwork as one file and your foil artwork as a separate file or artboard. Your design should contain everything that will be reproduced using ink, while the foil layer should contain only the elements intended to receive metallic foil.

Foil elements should be supplied as solid 100% K black artwork. This layer is used purely as a guide during proofing and production to indicate where foil should be applied.

Foil Artwork Tips from Our Team

Having produced thousands of foil printed products, we've seen first-hand which artwork approaches consistently create the strongest results. While every design is different, the considerations below can help you make the most of metallic foil within your artwork.

For the best results:

  • Use foil to support the artwork, not compete with it. Focal points, highlights, decorative elements, and key visual features often benefit most from metallic foil.

  • Consider how the foil will be viewed. Larger foil areas create a stronger reflective effect, while smaller details can introduce subtle highlights and points of interest.

  • Create clear visual separation between foil elements and the surrounding artwork. Strong contrast often helps metallic details stand out more effectively.

  • Think about how lighting will interact with the finished print. Foil is designed to catch and reflect light, meaning its appearance will naturally change depending on viewing angle and environment.

  • Match the foil colour to the aesthetic of the artwork. Different metallic finishes can reinforce mood, subject matter, and visual themes in very different ways.

  • If you're unsure whether a design is suitable for foil printing, our team can review your artwork and provide guidance before production begins.

Before You Send Your Artwork:

Before you send your artwork files, please double check that:

✔ The foil layers are separate from your CMYK artwork

✔ Your foil artboards are supplied as 100% K black

✔ Key elements of your art print design sit inside the 3mm safe zone

✔ 2mm bleed has been added to every design

✔ Any cut line has been shown separately with a 1pt thick magenta line

✔  Artwork is supplied at a minimum resolution of 300DPI

Artwork advice by Liam Smith

TheFoilPrintingCo founder and Managing Director Liam Smith has close to 20 years of experience in the print industry. His expertise spans print production, specialist finishing methods, and the commercial aspects of modern printing. After launching TheFoilPrintingCo as a home-based start-up in 2007, Liam developed a strong practical understanding of the industry, bringing valuable knowledge and real-world insight to every article he produces.

What Is Foil Art Printing?

Foil art printing is a specialist print process that applies a metallic finish to selected areas of an artwork using heat and pressure. Unlike standard inks, metallic foil reflects light directly from the surface, creating stronger contrast, sharper highlights, and a more dynamic finish across typography, illustration, and graphical detail.

To achieve clean, reliable foil adhesion, all foil art prints are finished with a soft-touch laminate on any side where foil is applied. This creates the smooth, consistent surface needed for accurate foil application while also protecting the print and giving the finished artwork a more refined feel in hand.

Because foil reacts differently under changing light, it introduces an additional layer of depth and movement that standard print cannot reproduce.

What Is the Best Paper Stock for Foil Art Prints?

There’s no single “best” paper stock for foil art prints, as the right option depends on the style of artwork and the overall finish you want to achieve.

Because all foil art prints are produced with a soft-touch laminate, the foil itself remains consistent across different paper stocks. The main difference comes from how the artwork, colour, texture, and paper tone appear beneath the laminate, which changes the overall contrast and character of the finished print.

Smooth coated stocks such as silk and gloss tend to create cleaner, brighter artwork presentation, while uncoated and recycled papers introduce a softer, more natural feel through their texture and paper tone. We also offer specialist stocks including Colorplan and Colourcore, each creating a different visual relationship between the artwork, paper, and metallic foil.

Can I Print Multiple Artwork Designs Within the Same Order?

Yes. Our split design option allows multiple artwork variations to be produced within the same print run, rather than requiring separate orders for each design.

For example, if you order 100 art prints across 5 different artworks, the quantity can be divided however you choose, whether evenly across all designs or weighted more heavily towards selected pieces. Simply supply your artwork files and let our team know how you’d like the quantities split.

Can Foil Be Applied to Fine Detail and Linework?

Yes, although very fine foil elements require careful artwork setup to ensure they reproduce cleanly in print.

Strong contrast, clear spacing, and well-defined shapes generally produce the most reliable foil results, particularly across smaller typography, fine lines, and detailed illustration. Where foil elements become too small or tightly grouped, detail can begin to fill in or lose definition during production.

If you’re preparing your own files, we recommend reading our guide on setting up files for metallic foil printing before finalising your artwork.

How Long Do Foil Art Prints Take to Produce?

Once your order has been placed and your artwork files have been supplied, our team will prepare and send your digital proof for approval. This allows you to review artwork positioning, foil placement, and overall layout before production begins.

Production starts once your proof has been approved, with turnaround times varying depending on the specification selected at checkout. Most foil art print orders are produced and dispatched within a few working days of proof approval.
