A Guide To Writing Design Briefs

It’s easy to write a design brief for your metallic foil prints – you just need to be clear and concise! Send us your brief as an email, using the following example to tell us all we need to know.

Example Design Brief

Email subject line: Design brief for order number 000000

Your name, phone number and website (if this applies):

What prints I need: (For example, 500 business cards)

Deadline for my print project (if this applies): (please bear in mind that our standard turnaround is 5 working days minimum)

Who these prints are for: (for example wedding guests, fans or prospective customers)

What I want these prints to achieve: (for example, get more calls, wow my wedding guests, or increase word-of-mouth about my business)

Text to include on my prints: (include text here, or “please see files attached”)

Images to include: (for example, images attached as files, or a Shutterstock image ID if you’d like us to include this in your design; or our designers can find the best images to suit your prints).

Logos, brand guidelines or existing marketing (if this applies): please see links or files attached.

Precise description of the design(s): (Example): Business cards. Gold foil on the front, with an ornate and eye-catching design. White foil on black for the back, so that the contact details are crisp and easy to read. Design-wise I want to combine a classic, early 1900s style with the corporate style that our big-name clients are used to. See the example website below, that I’d like this design to look like.

The Ordering Process

We’ll ask for your design brief once you’ve completed your purchase. The process goes as follows:

  1. Choose your product and print options on our website.
  2. Under ARTWORK, choose ‘Supply Brief & We Design’.
  3. Complete your order and online payment.
  4. Look for our confirmation email in your inbox.
  5. Reply to our email with your design brief.
  6. We’ll email you a PDF proof to approve in the next few working days:
    • We’ll supply your proof in 300 or 600 DPI, with 2mm minimum print bleed over its edges.
    • Design-wise, the only real constraint is our 0.5pt minimum line width in your print design.
  7. If you’re happy with your design, just reply to our proof email and tell us to go ahead with printing it. Or, if you’d like to change your design, reply with your comments and we’ll email you an amended proof of your design as quickly as possible.
  8. Once you approve your proof, it takes 5 working days to foil print your finished items. Delivery within the UK is usually the next working day, while shipping to Europe usually takes between 3-5 working days and shipping to the USA takes 1-3 working days.

So There You Go!

That’s everything you’ll need to supply a great design brief! A good brief gives your designer all they need to create your foil printing artwork as quickly (and affordably) as possible.
